The Uncompahgre Valley Water Users Association was developed in 1902 to organize a plan to divert the Gunnison River into the valley.
The Uncompahgre Project is located in the Gunnison River Basin. It originates at Taylor Park located 30 miles northeast of Gunnison, Colorado.
The canals and laterals are on private property. The UVWUA has an exclusive easement to deliver water and maintain the system. Canal roads are not a public right of way.
A water right is a real property right that allows the holder to use a certain portion of the river’s water for irrigation. The water shares in this project are transferred with the land by deed.
Because we are a United States government water project, we must conform to the Reclamation Reform Act of 1982.
